vurr vs chatgpt: what each one is actually for
the old answer to this was "chatgpt forgets". that stopped being true. here is the real difference, and the cases where chatgpt is the better tool.
if you are weighing these two, start with a correction, because a lot of the comparison content on this topic is out of date.
chatgpt has persistent memory. it has had a version of it since 2024, and openai rebuilt the whole system in june 2026 so that it reviews past conversations in the background and maintains a running picture of you. memory is on by default, including on the free tier.
so "it forgets everything" is not the argument. we used to make a version of it ourselves and it was lazy.
the actual difference is structure
chatgpt holds an impression of you. it is genuinely good at that. what it does not hold is a record.
ask chatgpt what you decided in the last quarter, how confident you were at the time, which of those calls you rated high impact, and which ones you have not reviewed yet. it cannot answer, because those were never fields. they were sentences in a conversation.
vurr makes them fields. a decision becomes an object with a confidence score, an impact score, a deadline, and eventually a logged outcome. that is a boring difference until the moment you want to look back across fifty of them, at which point it is the only difference that matters.
| ChatGPT | VURR | |
|---|---|---|
| remembers you | yes, persistent memory across chats | yes |
| structured decision record | no, conversation only | yes, confidence, impact, deadline, outcome |
| prompts you on a review date | no | yes |
| tracks execution after the call | no | yes, tasks and completion |
| models how you specifically decide | informally, from conversation | against a defined typology, see below |
| scope | general purpose, does almost anything | one job |
the part that has no equivalent
vurr is built on the self force framework, a model of human motivation by kerttu raissar, who also founded vurr. it maps a person across three forces, three motivational drivers and three ways of operating, which produces 27 distinct types. it draws on maslow on safety, mcclelland on power, deci and ryan on autonomy, and fredrickson on positive emotional states.
what that means in practice: vurr is not trying to work out who you are from scratch every time. it has a structure to fit your behaviour into, so the observations get specific faster. "you move fastest when constraints are clear" is a different kind of statement from generic advice, and it comes from somewhere.
chatgpt has nothing comparable, and would not claim to.
when chatgpt is the better tool
often. genuinely.
- you are exploring an idea and want range, not commitment.
- you want something drafted, summarised, translated, or coded.
- you want to think out loud with no intention of logging anything.
- you do not want another subscription. chatgpt has a free tier and vurr does not.
if what you need is a smarter conversation, use the smarter conversation. it is very good.
when vurr is
- the same decision keeps coming back and you want it closed rather than discussed again.
- you want to know, in six months, how you actually decide, with evidence.
- you want the call followed through to a logged outcome instead of ending at a good answer.
the two are not really substitutes. one is a thinking surface. the other is a record with a loop attached.
